Subject:grade my jade :)
Posted By: Brandon mccloskey Sat, Mar 17, 2018 IP: 173.188.16.27

Hello all, I was hoping someone could evaluate my necklaces? They are nephrite beads and 14k gold beads strung on knotted silk of a matching color, I am not positive that the black beads are jade but seeing how its nearly identical to the green nephrite I would assume so, it also does not look to me like onyx, too flat, and not dark enough. Anyway a rough estimation on the possible age/value/region etc. etc. would be greatly appreciated :)

Many if not most jewelry stores are full of ignorant, lazy, underhanded people. At least around here anyway, I would feel much better if someone on here who is knowledgeable in Jade could give me some helpful information.

That could be easily done if you would be in or close to BC Canada,

Beads may be some of the most difficult items to judge their material or age based on low resolution pictures. Almost most of the so called jade beads listed on eBay by sellers in mainland China were either made of dyed agate or worse glass. About six years ago, one still could buy beads made of jadeite in reasonable prices. It is actually harder to find necklace made of nephrite since the demand for them may not be as high as that of jadeite and labor cost for making them are almost as high. Most of the genuine nephrite necklace are therefor older pieces, probably made in the 60s or earlier. During the 60s, there were a lot of nephrite jade found in Taiwan but now their nephrite mines exhausted after one decade.

I believe your green necklace can be made of nephrite if the beads can pass the scratch test and the gold beads are indeed 14k gold.

I do not know what the black beads were made of. It is quite rare to find 100% black nephrite jades, they are actually rarer than green one. Some time they may be dark green and look black in pictures. If they can pass the scratch test, they can be nephrite, onyx, jadeite, etc. If indeed nephrite, like from Australia, it would be worth more than the green one.

If both are indeed made of nephrite jade and the gold beads are indeed 14k gold, then they may indeed each worth a few hundred dollars or more. Thank you for sharing.

Thank you guys for putting in the time to comment :)
Both do pass the scratch test and since they are unmarked I acid tested the gold beads.

Some sort of spectrum analysis would likely need to be done to find out if the black beads are indeed jade and to find out where they came from, no?
I have limited knowledge on jade but I know some experts can just look at a piece and determine where it likely came from by the color and.. inclusions I guess?
To my not very well trained eye the green strand appears closest to resemble Russian jade from the Baikal region but I have no idea if green nephrite from like you said Australia or somewhere looks similar or not :/
