Subject:Blanc de Chine- guanyin
Posted By: Marc Teunissen Sun, Mar 11, 2018 IP: 84.30.67.182

I recently acquired this Guanyin at an auction.
It was sold as 19/20th century.
I'm looking for more information on this piece and the mark. Thanks

Beautiful piece. This is from dehua kiln which is famous for its white porcelain ware in southern China. In the west it is called Blanc de Chine meaning "China white".

The upper mark in the shape of a double-gourd is a kiln mark in seal script of "Dehua" (德化), in Fujian Province. The lower four-character mark, also in seal script, reads down and across from the right as "Boji Yuren" (博及漁人) - the "Wide-ranging Fisherman". The latter mark is No. 3218 in "The New & Revised Handbook of Marks on Chinese Ceramics" by Gerald Davison. This mark has been in use on such images of the Goddess of Mercy Guanyin since around 1800, or the Qing Jiaqing Reign.

Best regards,

Bill H.
