Not even sure this ginger jar is Chinese, or wherever but looking to identify it if possible. Was purchased by my father over 60 years ago

The upside-down mark on your Chinese ginger jar, when flipped, says "Made during the Qianlong Reign". The mark is apocryphal, and the jar probably dates to the late-1940s to 1950s, the period being inferred from the black enamel diaper around the upper rim. The painting of a pair of phoenixes amidst peonies is the kind of metaphysical theme that was consumed by political turmoil in Mainland China during the 1960s-70s and didn't begin a comeback there until the dawn of the 1980s as far as I know. Of course, Taiwan can't be ruled out as a source of such porcelains during the interim. Any idea where your father might have purchased it?

Best regards,

Bill H.

Good morning Bill.
Thank you so much for your reply, which is so informative.
I am unsure of the date when this was purchased, but believe it to be in the 1950's. Cnn you tell me what the writing is on the white part of the jar? Someone else said it may be a poem or saying?
The jar has a lid with as single peonie, three leaves and a black edging but no other marks and can send a photo if that would help. I would also like to know an approximate value if you are able to help on that.

Kindest regards
Malcolm

Hi again Bill,
perhaps these extra photos may help with the identification ?

Cannot understand how my initial posting is at the end of another persons post. Probably how I did it.
Malcolm
