The mark is apocryphal, and the jar probably dates to the late-1940s to 1950s, the period being inferred from the black enamel diaper around the upper rim. The painting of a pair of phoenixes amidst peonies is the kind of metaphysical theme that was consumed by political turmoil in Mainland China during the 1960s-70s and didn't begin a comeback there until the dawn of the 1980s as far as I know. Of course, Taiwan can't be ruled out as a source of such porcelains during the interim. Any idea where your father might have purchased it? |
