Subject:Japanese Kutani Meji Vase?
Posted By: Mark F. Sat, Feb 03, 2018 IP: 108.3.157.150

Not sure. I will put the mark first from the bottom since this site doesn't resize the pics.
It's 7 Inches in height, and 3 1/2 Inches across.

Mark reads: Watano 綿埜 Sei 製 (Made by Watano).

Could be a mark by Watano Yoshiji a potter from the Ishikawa prefecture, but I think it's by Watano Kichiji (1860-1934), who was a potter born in Kaga, also Ishikawa prefecture. He started his workshop in around 1876 in Kobe and in 1880 he exported Kutani ware overseas from his business house in Yokohama.
Both Watano's are on the list of Japanese potters in the official catalogue of exhibitors at the 1893 World's Columbian Exhibition (Chicago World's Fair).
Date of your vase: late Meiji possibly Taisho period (1890-1920).
Regards,
Martin.

Thanks for your response. Very helpful.

Now if someone could date the Chinese jade plaque I found a while back and posted on here........
I guess I will post it again.

Another pic of the vase.
