Subject:Porcelain object Chinese Blue & White
Posted By: Niels Mon, Jan 29, 2018 IP: 193.173.39.19

Hi, I looking for information on the obect, which I believe is a candle holder. It looks old to me and I'd guess, I'd say 19th century. Any thoughts?

Many thanks, Niels

Hi Niels,

Your pictures don't show me what I would be looking for. At the base of the tower portion, is there a small hole?

If there is, then this is an oil lamp. The wick would go through the hole, with part of it sticking out the top, and a length of it lying in the tray part. The tray would be filed with oil, which is 'wicked' up by capillary action.

The top of the wick would then be lit.

Thanks for your feedback! There is no hole in the base that indicates that the item is used as such.
So I don't think it's a oil lamp.

I believe this is an altar stick. The cobalt under glaze looks to be a nice color and hand painted. The dragons have 4 talons done in the pinwheel style and I believe I see a faint rust ring on the foot under the edge of the glaze? I would conservatively say its mid Qing dynasty (could be a bit younger or older) . I'm not an expert in Chinese art though.
