Subject:Pewter food warmer - fine decoration
Posted By: Pete Sun, Jan 28, 2018 IP: 2a02:c7d:4d74:2a00:a

I think this is a food warmer. The decoration is beautifully done. Looks to be pewter or could it be paktong - it's not as tanished as I would expect from pewter. Is it Chinese or Japanese? Signature on side looks Japanese and the design elements. And late 19thC date? Further info welcome. I looked at Swatow pewter marks but they didn't match the mark on mine. Does anyone know what the mark says? Also I think the decoration would look better if I polished it. What do folks think? Thanks, Pete

Your mark (shown upside down) says "Lianshun [factory name] of Chaoyang - Completely Clean and Pure" (潮陽聯順, 凈足 - Chaoyang Lianshun, Jingzu).

Chaoyang is a district in Shantou city (the old Swatow), Guangdong Province. Chaoyang is a center for factories working in Pewter, which this item appears probably to be.

Best regards,

Bill H.

Thanks very much Bill, is it likely to be earlier than 1900 do you know?

If it doesn't have "China" or "Made in China" mark in English, I'd think it has a chance of being made before 1890.
