Going by your pictures, this item looks a poured
kind of plastic.

I don't see any Schreger Lines. I think it is cast resin with decorative value only. That dirt/patina looks fake (to give the appearance of age).

Stan

Thank you so much. I appreciate that.

As you instructed, I tested with heated pin to penetrate. The pin did not go through. I did the same to a plastic. The pin melts the plastic.

I guess it is not made from resin or plastic. Please review enclosed photo.

Anyway, thank you so much for the information. I appreciate that.

If this was made from a tusk, the pieces sticking up have to be separate carved pieces joined to the main tusk. Are there lines or evidence of such joining or is it all one piece?

Cheers,
Stan

Hi Stan,

I took three photos. Two pagodas are connected to the main tusk and the flag is glued.

Thank you so much for taking some time and sharing your expertise. I appreciate that.

I hope I will be helpful to you someday.

I would love to know what it is then. My question is why would anyone want to spend so much effort applying what all my instincts tell me is a false patina, if the piece is tusk. It just doesn't compute with me. Shame if it were a tusk. I'm rather against all that although it is not for me to moralize on times gone by. Everyone makes errors and likewise every generation the same. Interesting post. Thanks

This "tusk" appears to be molded of a composite that I heard during my time in Asia was composed in part of powdered bone, which added a realistic color and presumably came from animals incidental to our own food chain. Real ivory carvings also occasionally have separately carved parts. In any event, unless the stand is plastic too, only a tree got whacked for the sake of this piece.

Best regards,

Bill H.

I concur. From the enlargements, this has to be a man-made composite of some sort. It sounds like Bill H. nailed it.

Stan

I was at the museum this past week and took a few pictures of a real carved tusk for comparison.

I think, if you look at the pictures below, you can see better definition and better workmanship when compared to the one you show above. Also, the tusk below doesn't have that gross black muck all over it.

What size is your tusk?

Stan

Hi Stan,

What a beautiful piece it is!

Like you said, mine is not ivory nor plastic. Actually, it is not mine. I sold it.

Thank you for your concern. I learned something about ivory.

I appreciate that.

I hope you made a profit. It's great to get paid for learning. It usually costs me (sometimes big time) to learn.

Cheers,
Stan
