Subject:Damage to Meiji Era Bronze Woven Damascene Basket

Hello, I have what I believe to be a Meiji era woven bronze damascene basket. Unfortunately, the piece appears to have water damage on the lower left corner of the center medallion, partially obscuring the main artistic image and artist’s signature. Are there any recommendations for how I might remediate the damage or would this best be left to a conservator? Would anyone be able to identify this artist from the characters that are visible?
