Posted By: kay Mon, Jan 15, 2018 IP: 2600:1003:b107:2026:

Hello! Can someone help me identify the seal and marks on this scroll (also if it is Chinese or Japanese)? Thank you in advance!

The scroll is Chinese.
Inscription reads,
乙酉年仲夏 Year of Wood-Rooster (...1705,1765...) Midsummer
馬荃 Ma Quan (Signature)
1st seal, 馬荃 Ma Quan
2nd seal, 紅香 Jiang Xiang (Courtesy name)

達磨渡江 Dharma crossing the river (Title)

Ma Quan (1669-1722)Qing Dynasty female artist
Painted mostly flowers,birds and insects.
On the net you can find her works - only flowers and birds. The subject of this painting is unexpected from her. Entirely different world.

Forged artwork from China always been a big business.

With regards,
I.Nagy
