Subject:Roundel age and help
Posted By: John Alden Sun, Jan 07, 2018 IP: 2607:fb90:8170:13e7:

Does anyone know the age of this roundel. From what my research tells me it is geared toward prosperity and is not meant for any royalty being it only has two claws. I paid a few hundred for it but any info on age, history, value etc..it has amazing detail but i am guessing only two claws takes away from the rarity and value.

Might not be helpful but the link below includes a dragon claws section reviewing the significance of the number of claws.

You probably already saw the prior listings on Liveauctioneers for roundels. Perhaps someone there has experience with them?

Yes I have researched them but the prices are a very wide range and i could not find one with only two claws most have four and five so i wasnt sure if it would make this one less desirable even known it seems to have more or the same detail in the ones that have more claws. Thanks !

I don't know anything about these, but have a question. The back looks like it might be cast. What is it made of?

Cheers,
Stan

Hi Stan the back is made of a pink thread most likely silk. Almost like a cover for the patch. I think this one may be from The Empress Dowager late qing dynasty and maybe used in a guest room on a robe for a lessor court member to show rank while there. This is just an educated guess as i am far from an expert and more a novice collector. Maybe one of the experts can add in. Seems some can fetch a decent amount at auction but they all have four or five claws.
