Subject:Expert on Lin Fengmian needed...or even an amature with some knowledge
Posted By: JayC Mon, Dec 18, 2017 IP: 71.33.194.27

Hello!

I picked this up a few years ago and thought it was an interesting Lin Fengmian-like watercolor. I can't figure out what the "chicken-scratch" seal is under the messy signature but what I'm really curious about is if the name of the opera character is actually "Whit". Is anyone familiar with this opera and can clarify the figure? Thank you!

Perhaps you have already seen these websites?

An artist by that name also came up on Google.

Hello:

I appreciate the response...it has been the only one. I actually am fairly familiar with Lin Fengmian's work which is why I don't believe this is a real Fengmian...unless perhaps it is a study of his done, maybe, during his time in France or other milieu when using the English alphabet might have been appropriate. The work does not have the smooth, fluid strokes of a finished piece and the seal is unintelligible. This is why I would like to know the English translation for this operatic character...it is a very famous original ink wash by Fengmian. Again, thank you for your response...it's nice to know someone responds to something other than "what is this seal?" or "how much is my vase worth?"
