Subject:What’s the reignmark on this yellow ceramic

Hi I’m trying to figure out the seal mark and the Chinese words on the vase.. it’s from a shipwreck

Dear Mr Shariff

The mark says Da Ya Zhai. Which means it purports to be from the late Qing Dynasty.

But again, sorry to bear bad news, but there's no way that shade of yellow comes from the Qing Dynasty. That's just my initial reaction.

Maybe transfer printing is an obsession of mine, but looking at the little green bird, the flowers and the oval mark, I slightly suspect the lines have been printed on and then coloured in by hand.

There is also no sign that this object was ever under the sea...

A photograph of the footrim of this vase might be useful.

Kind regards
J.Lim

These continued postings at least serve as alerts to what kinds of fakes are being introduced into the marketplace.
