Subject:Identification Ancient Chinese Painting in the style of Ren Renfa
Posted By: Miano Tue, Oct 31, 2017 IP: 119.95.194.62

Hello Friends,

I have this painting in my private collection and would like to identify the artist and/or period.

It is a framed, ink and color on silk, unmarked, has no calligraphy and only three seals. Would you be in a position to translate the characters/seals and advise any artist who this work maybe attributed to?

It is the style of Ren Renfa (1254–1327), courtesy name Ziming (子明).

Kind regards,

Miano

This is a modern imitation of a Song dynasty painting. Unrelated to Ren Renfa, it is copying the lead rider in the anonymous painting "Lady Guoguo on a Spring Outing" that exists in two versions, one in the Liaoning Provincial Museum, the other in the National Palace Museum, Taiwan. The Liaoning version is the better known and is shown here. Your picture is imitating the rightmost rider: https://www.google.com/culturalinstitute/beta/asset/SAGTjfLyplFQQg

The seals are imitations of seals belonging to the Qianlong emperor and his painting inventory.

Hello Rat,

Thank you for the clarification.

Edit: rather than say your painting is unrelated to Ren Renfa, it's more correct to say that Ren Renfa looked for inspiration and precedent to Song dynasty examples such as the painting your picture is imitating.
