Can anyone identify the item shown? Japanese or Chinese? Or...? Thanks in advance for your help.

unassuming that you have made a scratch test, this could well be a jade belt pendant

Thanks for the info. yes, this appears to be a nice piece of nephrite jade. I've tried to find similar items with no luck. The closest I could find is archaic Hongshan carvings (which this is clearly not) that are said to represent a cicada larva. Would this be Chinese, or Japanese, any idea of the era that these were commonly used? Or is it modern? Thanks in advance.

Most likely Chinese. It could be last Century, it does not look old.
