Subject:Wood Buddha
Posted By: Buddy Sun, Oct 15, 2017 IP: 73.171.236.12

My sister was given this as a gift. It measures 25 inches and is made of wood. Any info on dating it or the carver from the inscription? Thank you.

Your wood sculpture depicts Budai (or Pu Tai) a Chinese deity, verbatim "Cloth Sack" seen as an incarnation of Maitreya (Future Buddha)
In Japan called Hotei and considered one of the
Seven Lucky Gods.
Character on the belly reads 福 Happiness
Character on the back reads 黄布袋 Yellow Budai
(Yellow Budai has a special Chan (Zen) connotation.

With regards,
I.Nagy
