Subject:Help With Signature Inside Painted Glass Snuff Bottle "100 Boys"
Posted By: Kevin Donnelley Fri, Oct 13, 2017 IP: 173.2.228.164

The interior of the compressed bottle painted with continuous children at play scenes.
Titled " One Hundred Boys" by the last row of characters to the right. And, I am hoping one of the Chinese experts might offer a translation of the rest of the calligraphy.
H: 2 1/2"; 6.35 cm
Mouth Diam: .87cm

Thank you for looking

Kind regards
Kevin

This is a c. 1970s tourist trade snuff bottle. I can't speak to the characters, but they may have a date. I included a couple of pictures of 19th Century children playing from the Bob Stevens book.

What I have learned since the 1st post is that the bottle was made by a Ji school graduate. The school was started by the master Wang Xisan in 1968
Only graduates of the school could sign their works
The 2nd seal which is the personal one is known to some but remains unidentified

The second seal reads 印, which simply means "seal". It's quite generic and common on snuff bottles and porcelain.

Thank you for the information - is there any background information on the use of the generic seal?

Any guess on an interpretation of the calligraphy?

Many thanks

The second line at the right of the inscription has a cyclical date of 'Yihai san' (乙亥三), possibly meaning the third month or March in that year, which last came around in 1995. The third line starts at the top apparently with '宇' (yu), meaning room or universe, possible a given name. The last character in the same line is 作 (zuo), meaning done by". I draw a blank on whatever is in the middle.

Best regards,

Bill H.
