Dear Linda

I would classify this as Japanese Arita Ware because of the greyness of the cobalt and the nature of the calligraphy under the foot, though I cannot read it.

Kind regards
Jonathan

Dear Nagy

Would this make this dish Chinese then? If so, I withdraw my previous statement!

Kind regards
Jonathan

The only possiblity of reading is 怡和 Yihe.
昭和 (Jap. Showa) interpretation is against the
rules of calligraphy, however, it can not be ruled out entirely.
Furthermore, a ceramic company in
Jingdezhen with identical name strenghtens my
reading.
Name of company,
景徳鎮怡和陶瓷有限公司
Jingdezhen Yihe Porcelain LTD
In my interpretation it could be an anoher Jingdezhen mark.

I.Nagy

Dear Linda

If you are still interested, then if this is a Chinese dish I would re-classify it as Chinese Kangxi Revival of the late 19th century, simply because the diaper pattern (the flower pattern at the border) is remarkably similar to the below pictured Kangxi Revival plate which also has a greyish cobalt and which I also once wrongly classified as Japanese because of the border.

This dish I used to own, but now have sold. (The dish pictured behind it is a genuine Kangxi which I also sold).

Kind regards
Jonathan

Dear Linda,

Just for your information.
Recently I came accross with the Chinese transcription of Jardines (Jardine Matheson Holdings Ltd, which is Yihe, too.
怡和

With regards,
I.Nagy
