Subject:Soapstone Budha

I'm interested to find out some more information on a soapstone buddha. I have posted some photos - it is around 50cm tall. If anyone can assist it would be much appreciated.

This is a Shan-style alabaster image of the Sakyamuni Buddha in the "Bhumisparsha" or "Earth Touching mudra", also called the posture of "calling the Earth to witness". See the link for another such image currently offered for sale. The Shan are ethnic Tai people who live in what is now called Myanmar, formerly Burma. They are cousins of the Thai and Lao.

These images have been copied in increasing numbers in Myanmar and across the border in Thailand since the British colonial period in Burma (1824-1948). Accordingly, you should subject yours to a hands-on examination by an expert in the field before settling on a figure for its value.

Best regards,

Bill H.
