Subject:Japanese Bronze Cat With Signature
Posted By: Ray Lee Mon, Sep 11, 2017 IP: 86.128.141.18

Hi

I am trying to identify the Japanese maker of this beautiful bronze cat which measures just over 6 inches tall. I have shown the cat and the marks to the base in the attached photographs. I found an identical cat which claimed to be made by Miyabe Atsuyoshi, did he make this example?

Many Thanks

Ray

The signature reads (most probably) 厚義作 ('Atsuyoshi saku'), followed by the seal of the Maruki Company (まるき社製 - 'Maruki sei').
This lovely okimono was designed en cast by Atsuyoshi who worked on behalf of the Maruki Company in Tokyo.

This craftsman is not to be confused with Miyabe Atsuyoshi (宮部篤良).

Late Meiji period (1900-1910).

Guy.

THANK YOU FOR THE INFO GUY. I PUT THE CAT INTO AUCTION WITH WITH AN ESTIMATE OF £400 AND IT SOLD FOR £2200, WHICH I THOUGHT WAS TOO MUCH. THE BUYER RETURNED THE CAT TO THE AUCTION STATING THAT IT WAS A LATE 20TH CENTURY RECAST OF THE ORIGINAL. I CAN FIND NO OTHER EXAMPLES OF RECASTS AND WONDERED IF THE BUYER JUST THOUGHT THEY PAID TOO MUCH. WHAT ARE YOUR THOUGHTS REGARDING THE RECAST EXPLANATION.

KIND REGARDS

RAY

Ray,

Sorry to hear that. I have no direct knowledge of late 20th century Japanese recasts of Meiji bronze okimono either.

- What is the provenance of your item?
- Did the buyer gave you any detailed and plausible information to prove his allegations?

Guy.
