Subject:Cloisonné vases, artist signature?
Posted By: Wayne Wed, Aug 02, 2017 IP: 50.0.151.86

I THINK they are what's called cloisonné. Can they be dated by their style? A lot of work must go into making something like these. Is it good work, as it appears to my eye? Is the calligraphy on the lower panels w/the cranes the artist's signature? Are they from Japan as I've guessed? I have no knowledge of Asian art, & you can't appreciate something w/o knowing a little about it. Thanks for your help/expertise!

Hello, not cloisonné but Japanese Satsuma vases.

Thanks. I eventually figured it out. It seemed impossible to me that those fine gold lines could have been painted- they look a lot like wire. How do they SEE to to it I wonder. Must take weeks or months!

Thank you again for your response!

Wayne
