Posted By: Meg Mon, Jul 31, 2017 IP: 2001:8003:2477:3f00:

Can anyone tell me about this large chinese bowl that appears to be made to grow or display beautiful bulb plants. The art work is beautiful as is its colouring. Can you also tell mewhat the characters say on the base and side. I would love to know, thank you foe your help, it is appreciated.

Hi Meg,

The mark reads: 永慶 長春 = Yǒng Qìng Zhǎng Chūn in Chinese (in Japanese: Eikei Chōshun).
Character by character the Chinese reading says in English: Forever Celebration Long Spring.

On the other hand: Eikei is a Japanese name and Choshun means something like: Long life / Youth.

No idea what it means, or even if it's Chinese or Japanese. Perhaps one of the other forum members knows more.

Regards,
Martin.

I think this is a modern decorative bowl trying to emulate a piece of "Dayazhai" (大雅齋) porcelain, associated with the 60th anniversary of the Qing Empress Dowager Cixi in 1894. Pieces in this pattern usually had the term "Dayazhai", meaning Studio of Great Elegance", along with an oval seal on their sides in red, while the bottoms have the same markings of "Yong Qing Chang Chun" (永慶長春), a wish for "Eternal Blessings and Youthfulness", as seen on this bowl.

Check the link out for further information.

Best regards,

Bill H.
