Hello - Please help explain this beautiful dragon and embroidery pieces on paper.
Is this Qing embroidery? Suzhou?
How old is this?
Why are the pieces on paper? Is this rice paper?
Please help me understand.

Hi Nancy,

these are cut out elements from a larger kesi woven textile (see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/K%27o-ssu). Most likely this was a late 19th century dragon robe. Most likely these were cut from a damaged garment to save at least some of the elements. Kesi weaving was a very intricate process and even though your piece is of relatively rough quality it would have made sense to preserve them, possibly for use as applique's on other garments. See attached picture for an example of a robe similar to the one that I believe your pieces derive from.
