Subject:Hotta Yu Shoten Dish
Posted By: Bokaba Tue, Jul 11, 2017 IP: 2605:e000:af16:3b00:

I recently purchased this dish at a local shop. It is marked "Hand Painted in Japan" with a cherry blossom. It appears well-painted, but may be a transfer outline filled in in by hand.

This marks looks to belong to the Hotta Yu Shoten Company, which appears to have gone out of business shortly after WWII. The plate kind of gives me a 1950s-1960s feel. Is this possibly WWII era or earlier?

Thank you

Bokaba

Bokaba,

Looks indeed as a mark of the the Hotta Yu Shoten Company. The picture I added en the text underneath is what I have about this company.

Regards,
Martin.

Marks (see picture) attributable the Hotta Yu Shoten Company in operation from 1920 to 1947. The logo is in fact a depiction of cherry blossom.

The shop selling the wares was the Hotta Yu Shoten Company. The use of the word "Shoten" means "shop which sells wares fired from its own kilns".

This firm made an array of tableware and kitchenware, as well as animals. Very nice design values, however, the wares were not expensive at the time and were possibly considered cheap mass production even though they flagged up "HAND PAINTED".
Fact is, all ceramic of this type would be handpainted, unless it calls for transfer printing on certain bits.

Thanks Martin. Do you have any idea if my dish is closer to 1920 or 1947?

Bokaba,

I have no idea, I'm studying Japanese ceramics signatures, but know little about age of the pieces with those signatures.
Regards,
Martin.
