Subject:Help identifying ginger jar
Posted By: EthanE Fri, Jul 07, 2017 IP: 2602:0306:c51c:e200:

I recently purchased this for 5 dollars at a thrift shop and was wondering when in time it was made. I looked up blue and white ginger jar and found an enormous amount of jars that look very similar to this one. This makes me think that it is a modern, very modern piece. It does have a double ring mark in a lighter shade of blue and has no other markings. The ones I have seen have been described as Kangxi all the way up to republic. I am hoping that someone can teach me a little bit about these ginger jars that I have seen so much of. I enjoy looking at Asian art around my home, so I'm not worried about value, just information. Thank you

These ginger jars are known as 'Prunus on Cracked Ice' decoration.

Pictures are blurry possibly early 20th century.

Thank you very much for the information. Its nice to know the pattern. Im not very tech savy and did have a hard time trying to get the pictures under 500mb, so I had to crop and zoom a little bit. Im glad that it is possibly from the early part of the 20th century. I was thinking it might be from the 1970s or so. Thank you again!

I tend to agree, late 19th/early 20th Century or later. True Kangxi period jars tend to have a pronounced broken ice rather than swabbed on ground seen on your piece.

Thanks for the info, I checked out the true Kangxi jar and definitely see the differences. Big help for future reference | Associations | Articles | Exhibitions | Galleries |
