Posted By: Bill H Wed, Jun 07, 2017 I believe vases with such decoration were being made in China circa the late Republic or early People's Republic. Here's one I bought with the same palette and acanthus leaf scroll not long after I got to Hong Kong to work in 1978. I think I may have bought it at the China Arts & Crafts Store. |

Posted By: Bokaba Thu, Jun 08, 2017 Thanks Bill. I suspected late Republic (1940s) up to early PRC (maybe about 1960 or so). Is there any way to tell whether Republic or PRC? I was able to find a pair wall pockets with similar decoration advertised as Republic Period. |

Posted By: Bill H Fri, Jun 09, 2017 There's nothing slouchy about the porcelain painting at all. Here's another vase featuring the 18 Lohans, but not as well done as the wall pockets. The eBay seller dates it for us. |

Posted By: Bokaba Sat, Jun 10, 2017 Thank you for your help Bill. I take it the decoration depicts Tang Emperor Xuanzong with the concubine Yang Guifei. Looks like there may also be some peonies in the yellow ground decoration as peonies are also associated with Yang Guifei. |
