Dear Members,
Does this jar appear to be an authentic Republic Period piece. I am getting mixed reactions. I think the form, artwork, and foot are good for late 19th/early 20th Century.
However, there is little fading to the calligraphy, which contains some simplified characters. I understand simplified characters alone are not proof of a post 1949 date as some have been used since the Han Dynasty in cursive script.
I am wondering if these jars were made as blanks with many being decorated later as I have seen some with extremely modern (Cultural Revolution themes) decoration.
It appears to be signed Xu Xiang Xing (徐祥兴) an early 20th Century artist mentioned on the Gotheborg site around 1920. It could also be in his style.
Can anyone shed some light on this piece? Bill H.? Is this clearly a Qianjing school piece or is a later date possible?
Thank you,
Bokaba
