Subject:Original Utagawa Hiroshige I print?
Posted By: Brett Fri, May 05, 2017 IP: 69.113.3.200

I know this is a long shot. I got this from goodwill a few years ago and I had it hanging for a while. I decided to take it out of the frame today to check it out, and I was surprised at the age of the paper. After searching the seals I found that it matched one in the MMA as being published by Sanoya Kihei. It matches exactly in size. These pictures were taken at night with the flash on so I'm not sure how the pictures will turn out. I know his prints have been copied and recut many times over so I don't have high hopes, but I thought maybe one of the experts could chime in. It has a silk matte and the back of the card board has a tag which is shown in the pictures. Any thoughts?

I have doubts. Note that the seal below the signature on yours is different than in this one from the Boston MFA:

However, comparing the lines they look like they might be from the same blocks. It is difficult to compare with your shots angled rather than square on.

Cheers,
Stan

Thanks for replying. From what I saw, there were two original life time prints made of this print. One was the one you posted which was made by the publisher Wakasaya Yoichi (Jakurindô). The second one, which is the one that I have was made by Sanoya Kihei (Kikakudô). Both of them are in the MFA. The link that shows the one similar to mine is located here http://www.mfa.org/collections/object/bird-and-loquat-235533

I am not sure what this means. I can't find the information that led me to assume this was a lifetime print, but I remember reading that there were two publishers that owned the rights to this print during Hiroshige's life time. Maybe someone else knows more about this. The one in the link above shows many similarities in lines and ink, also the size is a precise match.
