Subject:Awaji vase with unknown mark
Posted By: Martin Michels Mon, Apr 10, 2017 IP: 84.26.216.123

Hi,

I spotted this earthenware vase online with a curious mark I've never seen before. It was offered as Awaji ware, probably because there is a square that looks like the Awaji Sanpei flag. But I'm wondering whether this is all correct. I couldn't decipher the 4 characters, only the 1st one (Mei?).

Has someone any idea what kind of ware this is?
And what the 4 characters mean in - I suppose - Japanese?
Thanks in advance,
Martin.

First two characters read 'Akashi' 明石.
Hope this helps.

Guy.
