Subject:Cup ID
Posted By: Roger D Thu, Mar 30, 2017 IP: 2602:0306:cdb2:6320:

I have a pair of cups with an unusual mark which I am unable to identify from my data base or any of the marks sites I have visited. The mark seems to have a resemblance to Koranshaw but is not exact. Any help to identify will be appreciated.
Thanks

I have determined that the mark is not Koransha and although I believed it to be Japanese, the design may be Chinese. Any help to identify will be appreciated.

The mark, as shown, appears to be resting on its left side. When flipped 90 degrees to the right, the topside character seems to be 翔 ('Xiang' in mandarin Chinese or frequently 'Sho' in Japanese names, with a meaning 'To Soar'. The angular mark at the bottom doesn't ring any bells with me, except to remind of the unreadable Japanese "monograms" that sometimes accompany artist signatures.

I searched the character and found that it appears in the longer names of at least a couple of Japanese potters, but it'll take someone like Martin to sort out whether that means anything. The cup itself looks to me like something from a modern mechanically printed dinnerware set.

Best regards,

Bill H.

Thanks, Bill. The cups are of very fine porcelain so I don't believe they are from a regular tableware set but possibly from a tea set. I have had them for about 30 years so maybe I will be able to ID in the next 30.
Regards,
Roger

Roger,
I've never seen this mark before, the angle on the right is seen more on Japanese pieces, but I can't figure out whether the character is a Kanji character or not.

In your original post you mentioned "unable to identify from my data base". so I guess you have a database with porcelain marks. Interesting, because I have a database of almost 3000 Japanese ceramics marks, so maybe we can exchange knowledge?
Regards,
Martin.

Martin:

My data base of marks is not well organized but I would be happy to share it with you. I am winding down my collecting so I don't often use the base anyway. Let me know the best way to transfer the images to you.

Roger Van Cleve

Roger,

Thank you for willing to share your information.
How to transfer, depends on what kind of data it is. Is it stored in some kind of database or just a directory?
My database is a MS Access 2007 database of almost 1.4 Gb with the pictures of the marks included next to all kind of info about that mark.
The pictures of the marks are also stored in a directory which is at this moment 78 Mb.
Are you interested as well in my data, and if so, do you want the Access database or the directory.
I have included pictures with an example of my directory and of 1 database page with this post, which also shows how the mark is stored in the directory.
Regards,
Martin.
