Hi. I recently attended an estate auction. The deceased ladies Grandfather was Ambassador (Envoy) to China at the turn of the century and brought back many unusual items. Among them are these etched stone panels with Chinese figures dressed in European colonial clothing. I believe they are quartz or white jade and are from the 17th or 16th century. Please tell me what you think. I will be taking better pictures and adding them to the link I gave. In fact, the 3 pics I uploaded here are new ones. Most interesting of all are these 2 large silkscreen panels I got that are being pictured as we speak. Will be posting info/pictures on them shortly. I am told they are likely 15th or 16th century. Here are 2 large silkscreen panels I also purchased at this same auction. I posted these on the ebay boards but was told this is the place to be for good information.

Here are a few pictures of the screens. There are many more and if I get much response, I will add some more if requested. I really hope someone can offer up some info on these very old and very interesting silkscreens. I am told they may very well be 16th 17th century. I look forward to hearing your opinions on any of the three threads I posted. Thanks! P.S. Your portrait of unknown person and bird-and-flower painting are generic type. Portrait could be of the fat envoy in 'folk' costume.

Bird-and-flower is generic type painting made for centuries, probably not very old when envoy bought for decoration in large room.

Silk can be dyed to make look aged.

These not "silkscreen". "Silkscreen" is method of printing designs on cloth or paper.

Your photos terrible. Perhaps someone can tell more if you take photos whole image in natural light, not use flash. Be straight-on to image, not at angle. But little to say about them if not have dedication, signature or owners' seals.

Why you think these panels Asian?

Look like accurate portrayal possibly Nederlander in 18th century costume.

Suggest submitting in-focus photos taken natural light to Rijksmuseum, ask what they think.

Note not "etched" - possibly carved in low relief. would need high-resolution close-up photos in natural light at angle to sun so can see shadow of carving.

Chinese would have no reason to make these and would not picture persons this way.

Japanese picture Nederlanders as caricature, not like this. Not make *for* Nederlander but *about* Nederlander as social criticism traders.
