Subject:Please decipher Chinese artist name
Posted By: Tom Mon, Oct 26, 2009 IP: 71.223.21.64

Hello, I am hoping someone can translate this title and possibly the artist's name from this somewhat poor photo. It's a painting on silk.

Thanks in advance.

Tom

it's not a signature per se, rather a label I think, "ruyi tong" where ruyi means something like "[with hopes that everything turns out] however you would wish". tong refers to "child", so probably has something to do with the content or the purpose for which this painting was made. the seals contain the artist's name, perhaps one is a collector's name, but are illegible to me from the photo

It will be better to post the whole painting though the three characters is obviously the title but the chop mark is really too poor to tell.

Ruyi Tong, roughly translated, will be "good luck child" or "a child who can bring you good luck or make your wishes come true." Child can be either a boy or a girl. The example I gave in the previous message did show a pair of good luck "children" - a boy and a girl. That is why it is so important to post the whole painting or picutre, rather than a part of it. Most of these modern pictures, would be impossible to figure out who the artist is, even you can translate the name.

I wasn't able to get a good picture when I was at the location of the painting. The subject matter is a child. As far as it being modern, I think it probably dates to early 20th century. I was hoping someone would recognize the chop even though the picture is poor.

Thanks anyway for the help.
