Subject:Japanese Woodbock print
Posted By: Daniel Drabek Sat, Oct 24, 2009 IP: 63.249.116.151

I've examined the print carefully and it has no halftone dots, so I am assuming it is a true woodblock print.

After looking up the artist and studio label, I've concluded that this is most probably a high-quality reproduction of a work by a very famous printmaker.

It is nicely framed and I would assume that even as a repro, it was probably fairly pricey when new.

The label has the look of 1930's - 1940's to my eye. So I am guessing that may be around the time the print was made.

I would like to know from the experts here if my guesswork is correct or not.

Also, there are about a half dozen small round holes in the print. (I've shown one in the inset shot with the labels). The holes are all quite round and about 1/16" in diameter. Were these likely made by some kind of parasite, or something else?

Thanks,

Dan

Adachi was founded in 1926 by Adachi Toyohisa. They specialize in reproducing famous Ukiyo-e designs - such as your Utamaro print - and are still in business today.
