Subject:Kangxi marked plate. How old is it?
Posted By: toan Tue, Oct 06, 2009 IP: 86.172.119.56

Dear forum
It is often mention that 4 characters KANGXI NIAN ZHI with or without the double circles indicate the item to be a reproduction. However i have seen on the TEADUST website KANGXI NIAN ZHI mark which was beleived to be genuine
I recently purchased a pair of plates which is almost identical to the plate which was sold on MEIPING website as OF kangxi PERIOD
I think this plate of mine is of 18th century, please let me know what you think
Thanks in advance

Hi Toan,

Last time I heard, a four-character Kangxi mark in blue and white was pretty definitive evidence of a 19th century or later date of manufacture. Much porcelain in this particular Kangxi pattern was reproduced during the Guangxu reign (1875-1908), which would be a good guess for your plate's date unless someone else might know if the motif has been cloned again in modern times. Here's a Guangxu-era bowl in the same pattern that was thought to be early Qing for many years while it was in the collection of its previous owner, whose estate was auctioned off about seven years ago in the USA. Someone even added some lacquer-repaired chips to the rim to add to the illusion of age.

Best regards,

Bill

This dish in my opinion is late Qing dynasty, circa 1900 to 1910.
