Subject:Carved Indian? Chair
Posted By: Dan E. Thu, Oct 01, 2009 IP: 68.187.105.179

Hi,

I'm hoping to learn more about this Chair. If any of you can tell me more about origin age or purpose I would be very grateful. I was told it's a planters chair from India. Does this sound right?

Thanks, Dan

Dear Dan

Two Kinnaree carrying an armchair in the front, with 4 Nagas at the base, and 2 Singhas at the back legs. It's Myanmar art, 20th Century, possibly made of smoked teak wood and rattan.

Nice piece but too much damage. The rattan seat can be fixed and the structure still can support human weight, you can sell a good price.

Have fun
Anita

Dan, your chair looks to be Burmese, probably late 19th century British colonial period. Burma, called Myanmar by its unelected regime, was treated as the easternmost province of India before being granted independence outside the commonwealth by Britain in 1948. The decorative details that I can distinguish in the photos include a pair of celestial half-human, half-bird kinnari on the front posts and in the bottom photo a pair of creatures with entwined tails that may be river dragons called makara or their cousins the naga. Perhaps with these terms you can locate additional information on the internet.
Best regards,
Bill H.

Hi, its a very beautiful thing.
I don't think its Indian.
My guess would be Ceylon or Burma, possibly Thailand.

Sorry, 2 Nagas at the base, not "4".

Getting old is so troublesome with eye sight.

Thanks for the info on this chair. I haven't found any other examples of chairs that are similar to this one yet. It's made of teak. I was able to clean it up and I oiled it with teak oil. It will soak in and not look as wet in a few days. I have a friend who is a chair caning instructor. She said she has done rattan cane work and she's going to tackle this. I will show you all when it's finished.

Take a look at the image gallery I put up lots more pictures.

Thanks again everybody! Dan E.

Dear Dan

20th century Burmese chair for sure.

Pls do not use primary color in your website, primary red background with primary blue fonts, they hurt my eye balls, nearly came out of my eye sockets while visiting your website...it hurts.

Have fun
Anita

Hi Dan and Anita,
It didn't really come through the accumulation of dust to me in the original photos, but now I can see the chisel marks and agree with Anita that your chair is 20th century. The older pieces of furniture seemed to me to have been more carefully finished, Downloaded herewith is one of my benchmarks for judging the Burmese (or more likely Shan) carver's art. It's one of a pair of yard-tall Ramayana dancers, probably carved in Mandalay. Still not 19th century either, but perhaps pre-Ne Win era (before 1960). Just an example of what teak looks like when the right artisan works it.
Best regards,
Bill H.
