Subject:Mysterious vietnamese animals?
Posted By: john Tue, Jul 15, 2008 IP: 124.180.195.68

Wanted: Any information on the 2 pictured animals. Both were purchased in Hanoi and said to be of old age. Some wear and light glazing. Brown colour. Many thanks

John,

These figures are roughly modeled after Tang dynasty tomb guardian figures, but they are not good copies of Tang figures, only approximations. They are modern, made for decoration only. They may have been artificially "aged" for effect.

Hi, unfortunately agree with Robert on this, modern decorative piece copying Tang tomb guardians.

Phil.

Thanks everyone. They are good talking points and cost less than a packet of smokes each. I just liked them either way. Check out my dragon Pot? on message board. No feed back yet but I thought it was geniuine. Cheers John

Dear John

Vietnam was ruled by China from 111 BC to 939 AD. Pre 19th century Vietnamese art mostly being seen today was copied Southern China in Ming and Qing Dynasty style, but in Vietnamese taste. However, this piece look like French colonial art with combination of French bulldog and Vietnamese art.

It's possibly a South Vietnam stoneware fu dog (lion dog) with celadon glaze, decorated for the temple of Cao Dai (Vietnamese riligion). It's new and made for home garden decor.

Have fun
Anita Mui
