Subject:Fine, big oil lamp from India or Nepal
Posted By: Zachar Sun, Jul 13, 2008 IP: 217.224.181.6

Hello!

I usually collect African art. By chance I saw this nice piece and bought it. Without much knowledge it looked fine and authenitic to me and caught my eyes. Now I would like more about it: origin / style, authenticity, value, function etc. A galerist told me, it looks like a Nepalese piece, circa 18th /19th century and recommended to post it in this forum.

The cock and its head are detachable. There is a hollow inside of the cock, probably for the oil. Over the four lamps there are images of Ganesha. Over the foot there is among other thins a circle with skulls.

Thanks a lot in advance!

Zachar

Hi Zach,
Its an absolute beauty.
These are usually described as 'Temple Lamps'
They are normally attributed to Nepal.
If you lift off the entire cover/lamp leaving the stand only, is it 53cm tall?
Yours is especially fine, probobly the best I've seen.
Is the Bird a cock or a Hamsa?
I have not seen one with a fitted 'lid' incorporating multiple lamps, mostly they survive like mine below. I am not sure if some had fitted lids and others were made to accomodate round bottomed lamps, please post a picture of yours with the lid off.

Heres a shot of mine 'as found' it was in quite a sorry state when I got it, very dirty, completely oxidised and not in a nice way.
