Subject:Amber Horses

Does anyone have any comments or opinions on these horses?

They have been offered to us for consignment by a private owner. He states that they are amber and he believes valued at between US$8,000 and US$12,000 for the pair.

I have only seen these pictures. I don't have any experience in items such as this. We specialize in antique Chinese country furniture. Your comments will be appreciated.

I have no experience in amber either. However, in a discussion with a shop owner specializing in Chinese objet d'art, we talked about a pair of amber lions or foo dogs (I forget). He told me they were made from an amber composite.

The differences I notice between what I saw and these horses are 1) the amber I saw was darker and 2) white "aging" was added to the grooves.

Further, amber I have seen of any size has inclusions and imperfections in it. The clarity of these horses makes me suspicious. The foo dogs I saw were also without imperfections in the interior.

I would urge caution.

Cheers,
Stan

'Silk Road Collections',

True amber cannot be molded in this way.

Many thermoset and thermoplastic resins imitate.

Do internet search those terms you will understand.

Your business need network of friends who can personal examine such items for you.

Good Luck,
Cal

Dear Sir

These 2 horses are too good to be real amber.

Amber is valuable, but craftsmanship of this pair of horses looks very crude and cheap. The horses is in modern style, like Ford Mustang motor trademark.

I have never seen flawless, clean and clear big amber like your 2 horses before except immitation made from Peking glass and casted polymer resin.

The way to test real amber is to rub it fast and hard with cotton cloth and/or velvet for a minute, it will become electrostatically charged and will attract lint/dust particles, you may put your arm next to it, your arm hairs will be straight up.

Pls read the link.

Have fun
Anita Mui

Stan, Cal, Anita, and Bill:

Thanks for your comments. I appreciate your prompt and frank responses.

I would love to have lovely exquisite Amber horses in our store and on our website, but these are not the ones.

We do invite consignment of quality Asian antiques, so please keep us in mind if you come across anything that you think might interest us.
