Mustang: An Exhibition of Paintings and Photographs in Nepal

Ceremonial chamber of Kuthu Math,
Bhaktapur,
 Nepal,
Robert Powell,
75 x 55 cm.,
watercolor and pen, 1981.

Collection Götz Hagmüller. Copies available in poster format. The upper painting records the appearance of the shrine of a defunct Hindu monastery (math) after recent occupants had used it for brewing rice beer. The lower painting records the same chamber after restoration. Careful removal of centuries of soot revealed that when built in 1750 every surface in innumerable charming paintings sang the praises of the Hindu gods. Since 1981 the monastery has served as the cherished home and studio of Götz Hagmüller, Austrian architect and preservationist.
