Maharaja Pratap Singh, ruler of Orchha in central India, leaning on an elaborate throne chair, in a professional photographer's studio against a backdrop of European-style architecture. The immediately noticeable elements of the maharaja's attire are the robes and medals of the Order of the Indian Empire, established by Queen Victoria. But these new symbols of rank and authority are combined with elements of traditional royal costume, such as the jeweled turban ornament.
