15 miles wide, 55 miles in circmference, Manasarovar
is a true inland sea. Hindu legend says Brahma created the Lake as a reflection
of the depth and power of his mind, manas. It is an inexhaustible
treasury of colours and moods. A thousand years ago the Tibetan yogi
Milarepa praised Manasarovar in a song, in which he calls the lake by its
Tibetan name: ‘The fame of Mapham Lake is indeed far spreading: people
say of it in distant places, “Mapham Lake is like a green-gemmed mandala!”
…The water falling in it from the heavens is like a stream of milk,
a rain of nectar.’ |
