A fine Gilt Bronze image of Manjusri
Tibet
circa 1400
gilt bronze
Height: 5¾ (15cm)

The sweetly smiling deity made by a Newari artist. Has many unusual features. He is exquisitely and lavishly bejewelled and inlaid with silver or electrum, and retains many of his original inlaid turquoises. He wears a high dorje topped chignon with unusual pointed protrusions arranged artichoke-like in tiers in his blue hair, which is (again unusually) arranged in a bun to the nape of his neck. He is seated in dhyanasana on an exceptionally deeply cast double lotus base (still sealed); his delicate, ring-adorned hands in dharmacakra mudra. The image is consecrated.
