Katsushika Hokusai (1760-1849)
Fukui Bridge, Echizen Province
ca. 1834
262mm x 377mm

Marvelous people-centric view of the famous Fukui Bridge, which was constructed half of stone and half of wood. The two diamyô each built half of the bridge according to their means. Since one diamyô was wealthy and his neighbor was not, the building materials differ accordingly. Along the riverbank we see see what looks like boards for drying paper or cloth.
