Kamakura-bori Box

A large and very beautiful Kamakura-bori circular box.
There are three layers of lacquer on the carved wooden core: Black, dark red and light red. The surface is partially rubbed to expose the under layers creating a patina of age and use (as seen on Negoro lacquer). The overall decoration consists of two long tailed birds amid a profusion of flowers, buds, leaves, and stems. - The base is incised with a single character (Shige or Masa).
