Brahma and consort
Marble, Western India
12th century
Height: 29”
Width: 16 ¾”

A marble frieze of Brahma with his consort, Sarasvati, both sitting in lalitasana (pose of royal ease). The use of marble and the modeling of the figures suggest the Solanki period, 10-12th centuries. Marble was a highly popular material in Western India especially among the Jains, who prized it for its white colour that suggests purity.
