Mughal Dagger Locket
India
17th c.
champleve enamel; on gilded copper
4 x 4.5 x 1.8cm

This exquisite locket is from a small group of Mughal objects decorated with turquoise and royal blue enamel, some of which are illustrated in Gold, Silver and Bronze from Mughal India, by Mark Zebrowski, (pls. 80-84). The colouring is a possible indication of influence from Persian ceramics or Chinese enamel work. The enamel was applied in liquid form after the metal had been incised and gilded.
