Pair of Dutch Decorated Rouleau Vases Pair of Chinese rouleau vases with carved lotus scrolls, about 1720. Decorated in Holland, 1720 – 30 The vases are decorated in famille verte style with deer and a flying bird. The enameller, not understanding Chinese imaginary, has given the bird the tail of a phoenix and the bill of a crane. A single similar vase was displayed in the recent British Museum “East Meets West” Exhibition and is illustrated in “Transactions of the Oriental Ceramics Society 2001-2 Vol.65”. |
