Kinrande: Porcelain Dressed in Gold

Jorge Welsh Works of Art
116 Kensington Church St, Kensington,
London, United Kingdom
Oct 22, 2020 To Nov 07, 2020

Detail: One of the biggest groups of kinrande porcelain ever brought together in a dedicated exhibition is set to be exhibited by Jorge Welsh Works of Art. ‘Kinrande: Porcelain Dressed in Gold’ presents an unparalleled selection of over 40 pieces of porcelain in a range of shapes, which result from 22 years of collecting. The exhibition is accompanied by a catalogue introducing new research into the global reach of this exceptional ware.

Kinrande is one of the rarest and most exquisite types of Chinese porcelain. Named after the Japanese word for ‘gold brocade’, these wares are distinguished by the use of gold foil designs on monochrome, mainly iron red, grounds. Kinrande porcelain was initially made in China during the Jiajing period (1522–1566), becoming available to international markets between the second half of the 16th and mid-17th centuries, after which it inspired many foreign interpretations.
