Copper Repousse Tympanum with Inscription

The inscription of this beautiful repousse tympanum reveals that it was dedicated in 1683 to mark the location of an esoteric shrine. This iconic composition, derived from classical Indian sources and seen throughout the art of Nepal and Tibet, depicts mythical creatures such as the kirtimukha at the top and a makara at either side of the arch to protect and celebrate the god it surrounds.
