Founded by emperor Songtsan Gampo in around 640, the Jokhang (also known as Lhaden Tsuglakhang) is the holiest shrine in Tibetan Buddhism. Barkor street, the main activity area of THF, is the circumambulation route for the Jokhang, already in existence in the 14th century. The Jokhang Temple has just been nominated for the UNESCO World Heritage Site List.
